Apple varieties for the Leningrad region

Not all apple trees are able to show their properties in a cold, humid and constantly changing climate. The danger of this region is that the fruits of winter varieties will not have time to ripen in a short summer. Therefore, it is better to choose summer and autumn crops, adding to them zoned varieties (recommended for growing in a certain region) of late ripening.

Given the characteristics, it will be possible to plant crops on the site that are guaranteed to give a rich harvest of high-quality fruits.

Summer varieties of apple trees

Ripening of such fruits occurs in June-August. They are sweeter when compared to later varieties of apples, but their flesh is not firm. It is advisable to use such fruits immediately, because they do not differ in long-term keeping quality - maximum 20 days. In addition, they quickly overripe, so they are not suitable for transportation. They will retain their appearance for a maximum of 30 days after harvest.

The fruits grown in the Leningrad region contain a lot of vitamin C when compared with fruits grown in the south of the country. Ideal for conservation.

Such varieties are frost-resistant, but they are afraid of sudden changes in temperature, which often occurs in the spring.

Wine

This variety has been known for a long time and it ripens at the end of summer. The tree has a medium height and a spherical crown. It quickly produces fruits that are round in shape with a ribbed surface. The weight of one apple is 100g.

The peel is smooth white-green with crimson sides. The fruit is sweet and sour, crispy and juicy. Their lack in a short storage period is only 45 days. The tree is frost-resistant and not afraid of scab.

Friendship of Peoples

This variety ripens in late summer and gives a good harvest - 57 kg of fruit can be harvested from one apple tree. The culture is of medium height, begins to bear fruit in 4-5 years after planting. One apple weighs about 100 g. Fruits are round, green with dark red stripes. The pulp is creamy, juicy and sweet and sour.

It is worth choosing it for the reason that even in a rainy summer it does not suffer from the development of scab. Moreover, if there are no pollinators, then the tree will not bear fruit. The apple tree tolerates winter well - it is not afraid of frosts.

Melba

The tree of this variety is tall with a rounded and sparse crown. Fruiting in August - the first crop can be harvested 4-5 years after planting. A culture at the age of 15 can produce approximately 120 kg.

The fruits are round, narrowed towards the sepals with a weight of 130-140 g. The peel of apples is dense, yellow-green with stripes of orange or red, and the flesh is white, juicy with a strong aroma. They taste sweet and sour.

Fruits quickly fall off the trees, and their shelf life is short. The culture is not afraid of frost, but at the same time there is one drawback - it often suffers from scab, especially if the summer is wet.

Papirovka (White filling)

The apple tree is undersized, the branches of which are spreading, but slightly drooping, bearing fruit in early summer. The crop is fruitful - from one you can collect 70-100 kg of delicious sweet apples.

The peel of apples is thin, pale yellow, and the flesh is tender and juicy. Ripe fruit weighs about 120-155 g. The crop will not last long and will not withstand long-distance transportation. You need to collect fruits in a timely manner, otherwise they will begin to crack right on the branches.

The culture is frost and scab resistant.

Caramel (Caramel, Candy)

The culture of this variety grows up to 3.5-4 m. The tree gives the first harvest at the age of 4-5 years. From one apple tree, you can collect 28-53 kg of apples and about 100 kg per season. One fruit weighs 115-132 g. Fruiting occurs at the end of summer.

The pulp of the fruit is creamy, sweet, “wrapped” in a red peel with a caramel sheen, on which you can still see stripes of yellow color. The variety got its name due to its caramel-honey taste. Delicious juice is obtained from it.

The culture is resistant to frost, but it often suffers from scab, which can destroy it.

Autumn varieties of apple trees

The fruits of autumn varieties ripen in September. After harvesting, it is better to withstand 1.5-3 weeks and only then use it, but you can eat it directly from the tree. Their storage period lasts until December. The main difference between such apples is:

  • larger sizes
  • bright skin
  • ripening times
  • the storage period is about 75-90 days.

In addition, they can be used to make jams, preserves, marmalades, compotes, etc.

Aelita

A tree of this variety with a wide pyramid-shaped crown can grow up to 3-4 m. Apples ripen in early winter and reach a weight of 120 g. They are round with a slight taper towards the sepals. The rind of the fruit is green-yellow, but after full ripening, a bright pink tint appears on them. Aelita's flesh is light yellow, juicy with a weak aroma and sweet and sour taste.

The variety gives a rich harvest within 4-5 years after planting the seedling, northern winters are not terrible for him, as well as such a disease as scab. 14 days after picking the fruits, they become richly sweet. You can store apples until the New Year.

Baltika

Ripening of the variety occurs in September. The culture reaches a height of 6 m, and its crown is spreading, reverse pyramidal and 4 m wide. The fruits outwardly resemble a turnip with a slight waxy bloom. One apple weighs 120 g.

The rind of the fruit is yellow-white, but as it ripens, pink stripes appear on it. The pulp is juicy, dense with a sweet and sour taste. The fruits tolerate winter well in the Leningrad region, while yielding a rich harvest every year.

Pepin saffron

This variety ripens in autumn and has good resistance to winter conditions, but if the summer is rainy, the plant will suffer from scab. But even if the branches are damaged during frosts, they will quickly recover. The tree grows short, but its crown is spreading.

Fruits are small, weighing 85 g. Their shape is oval with dark red peel and stripes. The pulp is creamy, juicy with a wine-sweet taste. Storage is possible throughout the winter.

Marat Busurin

This variety is one of the new ones that was bred in 1982, but only got on the register almost two decades later. Despite this, gardeners from the Leningrad region have already fallen in love with him.

The tree is short with a ball-shaped crown, which is easy to care for. The apples are slightly ribbed, almost half-colored with stripes of a violet-red hue. The pulp is white and juicy, ideal for making desserts and drinks.

The first crop can be harvested from a four-year tree in September. Each year, one plant produces 100 kg of fruit, if properly cared for. The culture is frost and scab resistant.

Antonovka golden

Before planting this variety, you need to allocate enough space for it on the site, because the tree is tall with a spreading crown. It will give the first harvest no earlier than 5-6 years after planting the seedling. But it will bear fruit for a long time.

In the Leningrad Region, the golden Antonovka ripens in autumn. The fruits are round, golden in color, sweet, weighing 250 g. It is not afraid of winter and rarely suffers from scab. If you carry out shaping pruning on schedule, the quality of the variety will only improve.

Auxis

The trees of this variety are low, the crown is slightly thickened, so it is easy to care for them. The fruit has a slightly flattened shape, and they weigh 130-140 g. The color of the peel is light yellow with a dark red blush, which covers almost the entire fruit. The taste of apples is interesting: both dessert and sweet and sour.

You can collect them in the first month of autumn and immediately send them to storage. They will calmly continue until March. The first fruits will appear on a five-year-old tree, which will produce a consistent and rich harvest. This became possible thanks to adaptation to a special climate. But at high humidity, it will suffer from scab.

Darling

The trees are of medium height and a sparse spreading crown. The apples are round, slightly ribbed, large - one fruit weighs 280 g. The peel is greenish-yellow with blurred streaks of red on the side facing the sun.

The pulp is white, juicy, tender with a sweet and sour taste. The crop can be harvested in the first ten days of September, but the shelf life is short - 2 months. Trees are resistant to scab, but in winter they can freeze.

Winter apple trees

The main difference between these varieties is long-term storage, about 6 months, without losing their original appearance and nutritional value. Even their aroma is strong and does not change over time. Trees are resistant to temperature changes.

Winter fruits should not be eaten right away, because the pleasure of sour apples with a thick and hard skin cannot be obtained. They must lie down to improve their taste. Only in this case will the taste and aroma of the fruit be revealed. To do this, they must be stored at a certain temperature and humidity level. As a result, the peel will become the desired color, the acid content will be reduced, and the starch will turn into glucose. As a result, the apple will become beautiful, juicy and sweet.

Star

The tree grows medium with a spreading middle crown, which has a wide-pyramidal shape that is easy to cut. The apples are smaller than average, but if you regularly remove the extra branches, they will grow larger. They are round, yellow in color, but there is a red blush throughout the fruit at the end of the growing season.

The pulp is juicy with a sweet and sour taste. In September, they ripen and stay until March. Fruiting begins early. They are resistant to winter conditions, scab is not terrible. The yield per crop is average.

Tellisaare

This variety does not fully ripen in a short summer, but the keeping period is long - until April. The trees are not tall with a wide cone-shaped crown. The disadvantage of culture is that if in winter there are temperature drops from frost to thaw, it can die, and in summer it can suffer from fungal diseases.

The first harvest, and at the same time good, the Tellisaare apple tree will give 4 years of growth. Fruits are small, they weigh no more than 120 g. The peel is yellow, more with a lemon shade, buttery, thick and shiny. You can understand that apples are ripe by their appearance - a slightly pink blush appears on them. The pulp is juicy with a strong aroma.

Moscow later

The tree of this variety is vigorous, but if you constantly look after it and cut it regularly, the crown will become oval, and the apples will become beautiful and large - up to 200 g. Moscow late is advantageous to plant in the Leningrad region due to its resistance to scab and winter conditions.

You need to collect it at the end of September and you can use it right away or wait. Their taste will not change until May. During storage, the peel changes its color from green-yellow to golden. The first fruits can be collected no earlier than 6 years after planting the seedling on the site.

Antaeus

Gardeners choose this variety for a reason. It gained its popularity due to its resistance to temperature changes and a stable annual yield of 50 kg per plant.Apples ripen in medium terms, and a tree with a height of 2.5 m is compact, and its crown lends itself to molding, so it does not need a lot of space.

The peel of the fruit is red with a slight blush. One fruit weighs about 200 g. The fruiting period begins when the crop reaches two to three years of age. Basically, the owners of garden plots start harvesting in early or mid-autumn.

Renet Chernenko

By the age of 15, the trees of this variety reach 5 m in height with a crown in the form of a ball and a width of 5.5 m. The leaves are medium-sized, glossy, green. The culture bears fruit every year for 60-170 kg from one specimen, but it will give the first harvest only after 7-8 years, which can be harvested in early or mid-October.

Apples are medium to slightly oversized and regular in shape. The weight of one fruit reaches 200 g. The skin is not hard, but dense, yellow-green in color with a red blush on the side that is most facing the sun. The pulp is white, firm and sweet and sour.

The tree is frost-resistant and hardly suffers from scab. If the proper conditions are provided, the harvest will last up to 235 days.

There are many varieties of apple trees intended for the Leningrad Region. They differ in the height of the tree, the amount of harvest, the time of its harvest, the taste and color of the fruit, as well as keeping quality. The main thing is to choose the most suitable variety and provide it with proper care so that the culture bears fruit and does not get sick.

9 summer varieties of apple trees - which are tastier, summer and late summer

Summer apple trees are called because of their ripening period. All of them are subdivided into: early summer, ripening in the first half of July, summer - harvesting between July 15 and August 10, late summer - after August 15-16. These types of plants are distinguished by high frost resistance and tolerate cold better than their autumn or winter counterparts. However, spring frosts are dangerous for summer apples, in which a significant part of the buds perishes. It should be borne in mind which seasonal group the tree belongs to. Summer and autumn plants should not be planted - pollination occurs and varietal characteristics deteriorate. But their proximity to winter specimens is quite acceptable. In this article, we will look at common apple varieties for summer, as well as the most popular representatives.

According to the ripening period, all varieties can be attributed to one of three categories:

Summer apples begin to ripen around mid-July. Basically, the taste is both sour and sweet-sour or sweet, juicy.

Such fruits are almost impossible to transport, as they tend to overripe very quickly.

Autumn apple varieties will ripen in early September. A distinctive feature of such fruits is the skin of bright colors and large size.

The advantages of autumn varieties include a long storage time - apples can be stored for up to 3 months at room temperature.

Apple variety: Autumn joy

Winter apple varieties have long shelf life, about six months.

  1. They are late, they are harvested in the middle or at the end of October.
  2. Such fruits ripen during storage.
  3. A characteristic feature of winter apple varieties is the hardness of the fruit, because they contain a large amount of starch and protopectin, which increase the weight of the apple and affect the pigmentation of the skin.

Winter apples are sour, have the largest sizes, due to their hardness and thick skin, they are easily transportable.

After the classification of fruit species is systematized by seasons, it is easier to choose the best apple varieties that suit you in all their parameters.

Summer varieties

Summer varieties are ideal because of their short keeping capacity for making juice or jam.

White filling

Probably the most popular summer variety is white filling.

  1. The fruits are incredibly tasty, mostly medium-sized, green, with a whitish tint.
  2. White filling ripens at the end of June.
  3. The advantage of this variety is that fungal diseases do not affect it.

Known for its incredible juiciness and sweet and sour taste.

Melba

Melba apples also have medium-sized fruits. Their shape is round. The apples are mostly green, decorated with red stripes. The fruit is juicy, ripens by the end of August.

Stark Erlist

The stark-erlist variety bears fruit with large apples, which can be safely picked in early July. The fruits are bright red, with scarlet stripes along the vertical. The pulp is firm, not very juicy, sometimes it is a crust. Stark-erlist apples can be stored for no more than two weeks.

Saffron

Summer saffron apples, although small in size, have an incredibly sweet taste. You can harvest saffron by mid-August. The apple is round in shape, has a red blush, which is full of orange stripes.

Autumn varieties

The advantage of the autumn varieties is the large apples, sweeter flavor notes, and, of course, very bright colors, as well as a long shelf life.

Antonovka

Variety Antonovka has fruits of average or slightly more than average size, round, slightly resembling a cone in shape.

  1. The color of apples is green, but with good ripening they turn greenish-golden.
  2. Antonovka has ivory-colored flesh - slightly yellowish.
  3. Apples of the Antonovka variety are sour, they are characterized by excess juiciness.
  4. One of the reasons for the extraordinary popularity of Antonovka apples is an unimaginably beautiful aroma that is felt immediately with the smallest damage to the skin.

In addition, Antonovka has several "subspecies", the most famous of which is the bogatyr apple.

Bogatyr

The bogatyr was obtained by crossing the Antonovka and Renet varieties, which is why the fruits turned out to be really large.

  1. In a way, the hero can be attributed to the winter varieties, since, unlike the Antonovka apple, it is harvested almost at the end of summer, and such a fruit can be stored for about 9-10 months.
  2. The hero tastes less juicy, but more powdery. The pulp is white, sweet and sour and very aromatic.
  3. The bogatyr variety is ideal for making jam, soufflé or marshmallow.
  4. The skin color of the fruit is green, but turns yellow when ripe.

Due to prolonged exposure to the sun on an apple, it can develop a pink "tan". Sometimes the hero fruit can be strewn with very small whitish or light green stripes.

Apple variety Antonovka Sweet

Semerenko

The Semerenko variety got its name thanks to one of the great gardeners of his time - Platon Semerenko, who, in fact, bred it.

  1. Semerenko is of medium size, large specimens are rarely found.
  2. The fruit is rounded, slightly cone-like, but lacking symmetry as such.
  3. Semerenko apples are green, in places white, as if covered with a veil. May have light pink subcutaneous dots.

Semerenko pulp is pure white, too juicy and very sweet, sometimes it can be a little sugary.

Pink pearl

Perhaps the most unusual apple is the pink pearl variety.

Their uniqueness lies in the fact that the Surprise variety with red pulp was used for breeding, and as a result, a completely new fruit was obtained - with a light green skin on which pink stripes form, and with a delicate pink pulp.

Pink pearl apples are a little loose and tart, which tastes like grapefruit.

It is good to consume pink pearls during your diet, as they are the lowest calorie apples, but with the highest water content.

Winter varieties

The popular winter varieties include, of course, sinap, golden, richard.

Sinap

The most exotic variety is Sinap.

  1. Previously, synap was very common in Crimea, but, unfortunately, it was supplanted and replaced by more traditional varieties, since synap begins to bear fruit at about 10 years of age.
  2. The apples are very tasty, medium-sized, oblong in shape.
  3. Sinup can be both green and red, depending on the color, it has darker specks under the skin.

The pulp is yellow, very juicy. Sweeter varieties than synap are worth looking for.

Golden

The most common winter variety is golden.

  1. Golden cone-shaped, elongated, bright yellow fruits.
  2. When exposed to sunlight for a long time, it may have a pink blush.
  3. A characteristic feature of golden is brown or red dots-comrades.
  4. The flesh is golden, loose, firm, light coffee color.

Golden apples taste sweet and sour, juicy. It is recommended to use such fruits exclusively fresh.

The apples of the richard variety are large.

  1. Their shape is also conical, elongated, asymmetric.
  2. The Richard variety has a deep red color, in places with scarlet stripes.
  3. The pulp is beige, juicy, with a wonderful smell.
  4. These apples taste more sour than sweet. Such fruits are harvested by the end of October.

Every year the number of new varieties of apple trees increases significantly. Modern selection of apple trees, like other crops, is aimed at obtaining new forms with increased resistance to various negative environmental factors - temperature fluctuations (especially in the winter period), drought, various diseases and pests.

The main problem that haunted both agronomists and breeders in the process of growing an apple tree and obtaining high yields was scab - a disease caused by a fungus Venturia inaequalis... Until the beginning of the 20th century, it practically did not exert its negative influence on the plantations of apple trees, since they were scattered and were found mainly on separate land plots.

With the advent of industrial plantations of apple trees, occupying large areas and numbering thousands of trees, scab began to spread rapidly, affecting almost all plants. After the harvest, the damaged and externally spoiled fruits did not have a normal presentation and could not be sold, which significantly worsened the situation of both large farms and farmers, and amateur gardeners, who put a lot of effort and hope in growing a decent harvest.

The way out was to develop new varieties of apple trees, which had the main feature - genetic resistance to scab, that is, complete immunity to this disease and, as a result, the absence of the need for fungicide treatments of plantings against the causative agent of this disease. Thanks to the excellent work of scientists, their work was crowned with incredible success. Gardeners have a unique opportunity to grow immune varieties of apple trees that are not afraid of scab.

At the moment, through the efforts of leading breeders around the world, there are many immune apple varieties that can grow in a variety of natural and climatic conditions. Among them there are varieties, the fruits of which are intended for quick consumption, without the possibility of their long-term storage, while others can be stored if conditions are met for a sufficiently long time - until the new harvest.

According to the ripening period of the fruit and their suitability for consumption, all varieties are divided into:

  • summer (summer ripening period)
  • autumn (autumn ripening period)
  • winter (winter ripening period).

There is also a certain division of varieties into categories depending on biological characteristics - the height of the tree, the volume of its crown, size, color, smell, taste and structure of the fruit. Next, we will consider the groups of apple varieties immune to scab, based on the ripening period of their fruits.
