The device of the canopy over the porch: the best design ideas and master classes
It is enough for the owner of the cottage to go out onto the porch in the rain or snow, as the question of whether to have a visor or not, will be unambiguously resolved in favor of this design. But the convenient time for its construction will be irretrievably lost: we will have to wait for spring. During this time, the steps of the porch may become covered with ice one morning. Or a snow build-up will form on them, and it will be so high that even the front door will be difficult to open. Another scenario is well known to motorists: in the evening it was raining, which flooded the castle, and at night it froze. Don't want to find yourself in such a situation? Make a porch visor in time!
What should be the visor?
So that you don't have to redo the visor later, you need to have a good idea of what exactly you want to get as a result. The minimum list of requirements that this structure must satisfy is presented below:
- it must withstand not only its own weight, but also the weight of climatic precipitation, taking into account the snow that can fall on it from the roof, as well as the weight of the green spaces surrounding it;
- since water will drain onto it, it is necessary to provide for a system for its collection into a storage tank or outflow into a storm drainage system;
- it is desirable that the structure protects not only the front door, but also the porch as a whole;
- the structure should not look like a foreign stain: it must fully comply with the general style of the cottage.
As for the last point, then with external indicators and design everything will be in order if you focus on the material from which the visor will be created. It should be combined with the exterior of the house, with the porch itself and with the roof. In this case, it is not necessary that the material completely matches. It is important to choose the right shape, size, color, suitable shade or reasonable contrast.
Sometimes a visor over the entrance is created as part of the main building. Then this is a solid structure, provided for by the building plan, equipped with columns that you so want to decorate for Christmas.
The shape and size of the visor should depend on the appearance and location of the entrance. Sometimes it is better to replace the visor with a canopy: in this case, it turns out to be a more appropriate structure
Choosing the design of the future structure
Take an hour to draw up a list of items that your choice is focused on, since it is your own time that you will save as a result, deciding on the design of the visor. By writing your thoughts down, you won't miss a thing.
Option # 1 - polycarbonate
As the main material for the construction of the visor, polycarbonate has far surpassed all its competitors. In addition to such remarkable qualities as durability, reliability and practicality, polycarbonate is also distinguished by its visual appeal. Due to the variety of colors used in its production, it is able to match any design ideas. There are, of course, materials that are cheaper than polycarbonate, but it is a pleasure to work with it.
Before you build your own visor using polycarbonate, you need to study the rules for working with it: nothing supernatural, but it is recommended to follow
Option # 2 - metal
The fully assembled metal construction is a fairly simple and not too expensive option. Working with metal is not as easy as working with polycarbonate, because a special machine is needed to weld it. This means that there must be at least some skills to work with it. However, if desired, welding can be changed to riveting or used to connect the structure of a nut to bolts.
The disadvantage of this option is that the metal requires anti-corrosion treatment. Note that this design, unlike the previous one, is completely made of metal, which means that it requires more attention.
Any product will look wonderful if the hand of the Master touches it. And in this regard, the choice of this or that material does not really matter.
Option # 3 - corrugated board
Decking in popularity can be compared with polycarbonate. A nice polymer coating allows it to compete with this material. But the corrugated board has a significant drawback, which should not be forgotten - when it receives mechanical damage, its surface is irreparably distorted.
Well, who can say that the corrugated visor looks too simple? As for mechanical damage, hail in our area is not a frequent occurrence.
To neutralize this minus, you will have to look for the thickest corrugated board as possible, but you will have to pay more for it. It should be noted that it is much easier to work with it than, for example, with metal and even metal tiles.
Option # 4 - lightweight plastic
This material is very similar to polycarbonate, but in fact, these are special PVC boards. They are used for outdoor work; they should not be confused with cheap plastic used for interior decoration. A feature of this material is its truly unique lightness. At the same time, the material remains durable and completely reliable. Plastic is available in different colors, but it can also be brought to the desired shade with the help of a film.
Very concise and simple. But by no means simple, mind you! Such a visor is like a royal speech: laconic and to the point
Option # 5 - metal and bituminous tiles
Two very different materials. It is better to construct canopies of them simultaneously with the erection of the roof of the structure itself. Then the remnants of the material will go to the visor, and it will be released almost free of charge. In addition, these materials will only be appropriate if the roof covering and the canopy are completely identical. Otherwise, the difference will be too striking.
A pretty visor made of reddish-brown metal tiles looks quite unusual. Its Gothic form fully corresponds to the architectural concept of the entire cottage.
These types of shingles are diametrically opposed in weight. Metal shingles are heavy material, while bituminous shingles are lightweight. Nevertheless, both visors will turn out to be nice and of high quality. A metal tile product will be slightly noisier in case of rain.
It's not even quite a canopy, but a whole canopy covered with flexible tiles. A pleasant bonus of such coverage is the silence during the rainy season. Nothing of the kind can be expected from metal, metal tiles and corrugated board
Option # 6 - artistic forging
From the point of view of design, the forged visor has always looked and will look exactly as it is: an expensive and original decoration. Yes, forging is expensive. But how beautiful! If you don't have enough money for a fully forged product, opt for the combined option.
Yes ... Well, in principle, a completely forged visor is not needed. It will look heavy, and it will weigh too much. But this work of art, combined with railings and lanterns, looks luxurious
In combination with polycarbonate, tiles, plastic, forging will still be invariably good. The only drawback of this quality design is its hefty weight. This circumstance must certainly be taken into account and entrusted with the installation of such a visor to proven professionals so that in winter it does not collapse under an additional load from snow.
Option # 7 - classic wood
Recently, lurid Gothic has become less and less common among country houses, more and more attention is paid to high-quality, reliable and environmentally friendly log cabins. The most harmonious with such massive buildings is a wooden porch and a canopy, also completely made of wood.
A flimsy European structure on a mighty Russian log house will look alien, albeit funny. But here everything is in place: a durable structure and shingles as protection from rain and snow
Like the entire log house, the visor must be treated with agents that protect against decay, insects and other troubles that can happen to the wood. In addition, waterproofing must be present, which can be used as slate, roofing material, plastic, sheet metal, polycarbonate, corrugated board and other materials.
Workshops and examples of construction
Metal shed visor
Making a visor over the porch with your own hands is not as difficult as it might seem. However, patience, at least, must be shown. To create this reliable and durable structure, we need the following materials:
- metal corners;
- cornice strip;
- abutment bar;
- flexible tile or corrugated board;
- screws, screws, anchors.
You need to prepare tools:
- welding machine;
- hacksaw for metal.
Do-it-yourself work on a visor over the porch begins with a sketch of the future structure. Since we are not going to make an abstract visor, but a very specific one, you will have to take a tape measure and determine the width of your porch. Add 60 cm to the figure determined by the measurement, and you get the width of your visor.
An approximate sketch of the structure looks like this. Do not rely on your own memory and imagination: draw, it will not take you much time, but it will not give you a chance to make mistakes.
By measuring the distance from the front door to the place that should be protected by the visor, we get the length of the future homemade structure. The height of the shed canopy is calculated based on the architecture of your cottage. Do not forget that the visor should have a slope of approximately 20 degrees. You have received all the necessary parameters, on the basis of which you can create a sketch.
Next, we proceed to trimming metal corners to the required dimensions. The length of the rafters from the corners is equal to the height of the ramp. From the corners, struts and a wall beam will be made. Between themselves, all the frame parts are assembled by welding. The resulting strong and reliable frame will be fixed above the porch. The wall beam is fixed with stainless screws in front of the entrance, and anchors must be used to fasten the struts.
The general view of the structure will be approximately the same. By the way, if you also want to decorate your visor with forging elements, know that they are sold separately, they can be welded
A crate is laid out of the bars on the rafters. If the visor is covered with corrugated board, a distance of 30 cm must be made between the slats. If the design will be made with flexible tiles, the crate must be made solid. The selected roofing material will be laid on it. You need to fix it on self-tapping screws, but with an overlap, and not end-to-end.
The finishing touches are the fixation of the metal abutment strip to the upper part of the ramp. A cornice strip is attached to the lower part. It remains to mount the gutter and pipe.

If we talk about the structure as a whole, the canopy or canopy over the porch consists of a frame and roofing material (cladding). There may also be support posts that support the outer edge of the canopy. They are optional. They are needed when there is no confidence that the structure without additional supports will be able to withstand settlements.
Visor above the entrance: general arrangement
Precipitation is generally understood to mean snow. In regions with a lot of snow, you can either make the slope of the canopy steep so that the snow melts quickly, or you can install additional supports. You can do both, as they usually do - the safety / durability margin soothes and instills confidence.
Frame and rack materials
The frame and supports of the visor above the entrance door are made of:
- steel angle
- metal strips
- round pipe
- profiled pipe
- wood - a wooden bar.
Rolled metal of various types and wood - these are two materials that are used in the construction of a canopy over the porch.
The most popular material for the manufacture of a canopy frame over a porch lately is a profiled pipe. With equal dimensions and wall thickness with a round pipe (if we compare the diagonal and diameter), the profile has greater rigidity. At the same time, it has a wide variety of sections - a square and a rectangle with different sides, it can be bent into arcs, it is easier to weld and attach to walls, it goes well with elements of traditional or cold forging, and is the same in terms of durability as other steel products. In general, it is the profiled pipe that is in favor today.
What is the lining of the canopy over the porch made of?
If we talk about materials for lining the visor over the porch, there is a very wide choice. Very often, the canopy over the entrance to the house is made of the same material as the roof. And this is correct, since in this case a harmonious design of the house is obtained. With this solution, any roofing material is used:
- metal tile
- corrugated board
The second option is to use the material that is used in the fence. In this case, both the design style and the decor elements should be recognizable. This will create a single ensemble with the site. Here the materials can be as follows:
- slate (usually flat, but not fact)
- corrugated board
- wooden plank.
And the third design option for the canopy over the porch is to put a canopy "neutral" in style and material. These include:
- wooden canopy
- polycarbonate (optional cellular polycarbonate, there is also sheet)
Glass is the least commonly used. It is necessary to use reinforced types such as triplex, and they not only are roads, they also weigh solidly, so that additional suspensions or powerful support columns are definitely required. And if we consider that sheet polycarbonate or plastic in appearance is not much different from glass, it becomes clear why glass is unpopular.
There are more than a dozen forms of visors over the front door. The easiest to manufacture is a lean-to canopy. Requires a minimum of effort and materials, and can look pretty good. Its downside is that when the snow melts, the snowdrift will be in front of your door and it will urgently need to be eliminated. Other models with inclined forward slopes suffer from the same "disease". These are excellent options for regions with little snowy winters, but with hot sun - not quite for our latitudes. Although, if you are not afraid of the need for urgent snow removal, you can do any of the options.
Shapes and names of canopies over the porch
It is a little more difficult to make a gable visor (this is a house) and a simple arch.They are good in that the melted snow is on the sides of the entrance and, even with a large amount of it, there is no need to urgently remove it. So for regions with a lot of snow, these are the best models.
Varieties of visors
In practice, there are several types of protective visors, which differ not only in the material used, but also in their shape. In this case, the most common are the following options:
- single-pitched canopy with a frame fixed on the facade wall
- a gable canopy, both slopes of which cover the porch on each side
- a canopy in the form of a tent that completely covers the area in front of the entrance door
- arched structure, bordering the porch from above and from the sides.
According to the method of fastening, all known canopies are divided into structures mounted on special supports and on suspended structures fixed directly to the wall using special brackets.
Step-by-step guide to creating a visor over an entrance with a blueprint
Having decided on the material and having thought about the design of the canopy, you need to move on to the most important stage - determining the size. The length and width of your visor should cover the area you think needs it. The determination of the required dimensions depends on this. For example, let's take a frame 99x150x183 cm.
- design sketch
- construction accessories (rafters, hammer, drill, level, tape measure, dowels, nails, screws and bolts, saw, etc.)
- wood - pine beams
- the selected material to cover the visor.
A drawing of the visor above the entrance, which we will use as a basis for our step-by-step guide. All units are in centimeters, so there shouldn't be any problems
So, let's start assembling and assembling our visor.
Step 1: cutting the beams
It is better to draw a sketch of the structure in advance, and then start preparing wooden beams for the visor. All wooden parts should be treated with special solutions against mold, dampness and possible fire.
So, we process our wooden parts with means for protecting wood from external influences and start marking on the wall where our visor will be located in the future.
We cut out 19 parts according to the drawing.
Step 2: Preparing the holes and securing the support beams
On the wall, using a level, mark the place of fasteners - 2 on each side. Then we drill holes for fixing the supporting beams, attach them and screw them to the wall with dowels.
We finish the markup and start drilling the holes. Choose a drill depending on which dowels you will use
Note: it is better to screw the dowels into the countersunk holes on the bars so that the screw head does not protrude from the outside.
Step 3: Assembling the base frame
We assemble the lower jibs and lateral perpendicular elements of the upper harness together using spike joints and self-tapping screws. We attach the truss structure to the wall with frame dowels. We install the upper edges of the rafters on the supporting frame, and the lower edges on the side rails of the upper harness.
We install the supporting beams. Use a level to keep your design straight
Step 4: finalizing the side rafters
We connect the shortened side beams to the corner rafters. We fasten everything with self-tapping screws.
Step by step, we continue to create the visor
Step 5: roof canopy
Now it's time to cover our hinged frame with the roofing material you have chosen for yourself. For this option, corrugated board, soft tiles or polycarbonate are perfect.
Having installed and secured all the main parts of the frame, we proceed to the installation of the roof. Everything is simple here, we fasten the selected material to the frame of the visor with self-tapping screws and everything is ready
Now you yourself can see that you can quickly, beautifully and not expensive to build a canopy over the porch with your own hands. The main thing is to accurately determine the design and parameters of all parts of the visor. Use quality, reliable tools and materials and your canopy will protect your porch from the elements for years to come. Good luck!

Do-it-yourself visor over the porch
A theater begins with a coat rack, an apartment begins with a hallway, and the first impression of a house is created by a visor over the porch. That is why I decided to decorate the entrance to the dwelling with such an element. I didn't buy the finished one, but made my own original version.
From a metal profile pipe with a section of 20 × 20 mm, I welded two triangular side frames and a pediment frame of the same shape.
From steel wire and tin made patterns in the form of twigs with leaves. To do this, he heated the material and gave it the desired shape with a hammer. I welded the finished ornaments into the side frames.
From a strip with a section of 20 × 4 mm, using the previously described method, I made curly curl elements and also fixed them in a pediment frame.
Using welding, I assembled the frame, primed it, covered it with one layer of black waterproof paint and screwed the structure with self-tapping screws over the front door of the house.
On top I screwed sheets of galvanized metal profile.
I attached a lantern to the finished visor, it serves not only as an illumination, but also, in my opinion, emphasizes the originality of the design.
